Practice Post

Hello! My name is Matthew Poirier. I am a sophomore at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. I'm an English major, live in a big family (8 in total) and enjoy excercising, reading, writing and playing music. I hope to one day be a teacher and author, and am currently working on my first, full-length novel.

  1. Furthermore, I was born in New Orleans, LA but ironically I don't like warm, humid weather; I prefer the cool air up South in the mountains.

  2. Hello Matthew,

My name is Rebekah Lloyd and I am in your EDM 310 class this spring! I do not know if you remember, but I was the person who asked you on the first day of class if I should - or should not - wear my glasses for my picture.
Anyways, I am glad I was assigned to you because we have so much in common! I was also born in Louisiana (Slidell), I have always loved to read, I exercise every day, and I also do not like the warm, humid air in the deep South! English has always been one of my favorite subjects, so if you ever need someone to discuss literature with, I might be interested. I would be really interested to hear about your novel, if you are willing to share! Feel free to email me at My email address

  3. Hi Matthew,

I am also an English major, but I enjoy reading literature more than the writing aspect. I see that you are working on a novel though. That is really great! What genre do you like writing in? Also, what type of literature do you enjoy reading. The English department has some really great teachers, and two of my favorites are Justin St. Clair and Becky McLaughlin. You should definitely try to take some classes with either one or both.

  4. Hello Jamie,

That's very nice of you to suggest teachers to get connected with. I haven't heard of either one before now, but I will try to meet them. To answer your first question, I enjoy writing pretty much any genre; I have worked on projects involving romance and others involving fantasy, similar to J.R.R. Tolkien's works. The answer to your second question is that I enjoy writing many forms of literature, but mostly fantasy such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter.

  7. Hi Matthew,

Yes, you should definitely try to take classes with them. I bet you would probably really enjoy Justin St. Clair. That is so wonderful that your reading and writing tastes are diverse. I would love to read something you have written. :)

  8. Hello Matthew,

This is a completely random post, and I have no idea how I found my way to your blog (sometimes these things just happen), but since I'm here and I see that you like writing, I thought that I'd link you to a writing website that's really helped me. It's called YWS, which is short for Young Writers Society. Click Here to go to YWS! It's a great place for posting your work, reviewing other writer's posts, and for getting great feedback from your fellow writing peers. Plus, most everyone on YWS (myself included) loves fantasy. We just eat it up. So, I think that's all I had to say. Best of luck with your novel!

    Bailey
